We are Christians Just the Same

Our Scriptural Mandate

I Corinthians 16:1-2 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given the order to the churches of Galatia, even so, do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

2 Corinthians 8:4 Praying us with much entreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.

In 1Cor 16:1-2, Paul does not make a suggestion but gives an order about the collection for the poor and persecuted saints in Jerusalem.  Paul continued, during temple worship, the practice of weekly giving to this offering that God required of His people.  Although the above verses are generally used to reference the many variations of tithes and offers, Paul is instead encouraging churches to establish a collection on the first day of the week for the saints in Jerusalem. Whether there was a famine or not at the time, which many Biblical commenters believe, Christian Jews were under heavy persecution by their own fellow citizens.

As Paul visited existing and established new churches on his missionary journeys, he began instructing them on the importance of supporting the very church that was responsible for their existence. In fact, this was so important for Paul to share, he devoted two (2) whole chapters to this subject in 2 Corinthians (Chapters 8 & 9). In these chapters, Paul continues his discussion on giving to this great cause.

If you do some research in the Old and New Testament about God’s commandments in helping the poor and afflicted, we believe you will come away with a new point of view and see how important this is to God.
